A New Season Begins!

Now that Kodiak High School's Cross Country Season has officially started, there will be no more organized trail runs until next summer. This site will now have updates of our season as we run around the island and compete on the mainland and here at home. Happy Trails!

Wednesday Run Changed!

Instead of running what will be a very wet Salonie Creek, we're going to meet at Marcus Dunbars house (1477 Selief) to run his new trail access of Russian Ridge. Hope to see you there!

Pyramid Mt.

Dunbar will meet tonight's runners at the base of Pyramid mt., past the golf course at the old ski chalet parking lot. More of a run/hike/run, and careful coming back down! But if the clouds cooperate there's a beautiful view at the top, and possibly some salmonberries along the way.

A Clean Start at Jack Lakes

A pre-run pic of the ones who started together at 6pm, several trickled in later and 7 individuals proceeded to lose and find the trail for an extra 1.5 hours after everyone else had finished. Luckily everyone WAS eventually found...muddy, tired and wet!

Jack Lake run and BBQ

Looking forward to seeing some runners for tonights mudfest as it has been raining for a few days now and the trail will likely be muddy, especially on the second part of the loop. Join us for a BBQ in honor of Sam Salus's 19th B-day at his house in the flats afterwards, just bring your appetite, a towel and change of clothes so we don't track the trail into the Salus house!

Wednesdays Russian Ridge

On a hot and dusty day, the trees can provide nice temps for a trail run. the top of the ridge was hot but the beginning and end were pleasant and soft of the joints, very nice! Some of the guys made a monster loop and found a new single track on the backside, running for 70minutes at a quick clip!

We'll run up around the reservoir, down to the VFW, down towards the hatchery, then up a "jeep road" until the trail meets the main Pillar road, then back down the road to where we started. July Schedule is in the works!

If anyone has thoughts on different runs they'd like to see next month, speak up now or forever hold your peace! I'll be making a schedule this weekend sometime much like June, minus the Near Island runs as the CC team runs those alot during season which is coming up soon. You can comment here or just email me. Neagley and Lucas will be running Fridays run up Kasheverov, a great hike for the less hard core mortals among us.

Termination Point

Some runners didn't stick around for the photo op, a few doubled back to make it in, and I think everyone had a great run. We ran a loop from the forrest trail out to the point and then along the coast back to White Sands beach. Another great day!

Woods, Beaches and Green Hillsides...

from the archives...Jack Lake run 05

Some tough souls tackle the steepest of a few good hills on this run, back in 05. Gloria and Amelia are just starting their attack. Many runners see this hill and turn back early, but the ones who press on enjoy the gently rolling hills at the top, along with an incredible view! This run can be incredibly muddy, very grassy and wet sometimes, but always worth it. Today should've been ideal conditions, hope it was a good one!

Jack and Lee Lakes Run

Well I wasn't here but this pic was sent in from Alana Roe of the runners who came out to the flats for a sunny afternoon run...

Jack Lakes back ON!

After talking to Matt Neagley this morning, the run is back on! He will help to give directions on the run and check people back in afterwards! Way to go Matt and hopefully I'll see everyone on this run next month!
Jen

Jack Lake Run Cancelled!

Sorry for the last minute change, but I can't be at this run and don't have a substitute leader. This is a great loop run but can be tricky to find the furthest out-point in the trail before it heads back, so really should be run in groups that know where they're going to avoid anyone getting lost. We'll run it again next month for sure.

Boy Scout to Buskin

This is a great run if you're looking for non pavement hills close to town, and when I say hills it's no joke. The"figure 8" that several of the runners did multiple times put the hills at abercrombie to shame. Just when you think you've crested the top, there's more! But another great day for it, sunny but not too hot in the filtered light and when the tide coincides just right like it did today (I've learned to check tide tables before scheduling this run) there's a beautiful white sand beach all the way over to the Buskin river as a cool down or warm up.

A few runners lost the shoes and got their toes sandy!

Buskin Beach

Lots of beach to run on, one of my favorite close to town runs!

Russian Ridge in the Fog

Some brave souls weren't deterred by a little rain and fog. The trail wasn't really that bad and the rain muffled by the trees above. A great run on a rainy day! Boy Scout to Buskin on Friday, see you there! Jen

Jaymi makes the cut

Allie was cropped out by request, but Jaymi is not photo shy! We had a group of about 6 runners that made this run a reverse of last Wednesdays run on Burma road. Beautiful day for a 10 miler, mostly trail with an icy lake at the top! Most of the rest of the runners made it to the lake for a 6 mile run total, good runnin'!

The Mighty Old "W"

Like conquering the "Highlands" of Scotland...our next quest was to run up Old Womens Mountain...

Tuesday, June 9, 2009

Three summers ago, same trail early July. This is probably one of my favorite shorter trails on Kodiak. It's always a bit tough going out because it's a steady uphill with few breaks, but once it does flatten out you can start to enjoy the view and then you come to the creek which can be a refreshing splash on the face or a dip if it's warm enough. The gradual decent back combined with the breathtaking view always make you forget the hill you started on and leave you feeling rejuvenated and just happy to be alive on Kodiak!

Abby and Kathleen head back up the trail after viewing the creek.

Cruisin back down, enjoying the view.
Chaven and Jenny encourage half way.
The group heads up the first serious steep climb going out the trail.

South End Trail View Point. The flowers are starting to come up and soon this view will be much greener! Great showing of runners again, most of them did the full loop so I didn't catch them on camera. Nice warm afternoon for a run!

Welcome to the latest kodiak trail running hub! The goal of this site is to inform and connect Kodiak runners for some great trail runs over our brief but glorious summer. We have some amazing trails to run on this island and it's a shame to not see more runners on them. We'll post some pictures of previous years runs and hope to get some feedback on runs as they happen. It's also a place to meet some of the KHS CC runners getting ready for their upcoming season as many of them use this as a pre-season tune up. We'll work on having a schedule here with updates based on weather, but it will have the be REALLY bad weather to actually cancel a run. Hope to see you on the trail! Jen Foster
